The Mercedes AMG A45 drivers Leigh Burges and Rod Salmon were elated after finishing 4th outright out of the competitive field of 62 cars.
Starting 20th on the grid, Leigh started the race and quickly started to pass the cars in front and working his through the field. There were multiple safety car periods and the team took advantage where ever possible with pit stop strategy to put the Mercedes AMG into the top 10.
The driver change took place about 1.5 hours into the race and Rod kept up the pace and continued the charge forward to get into the top 5.
Then with two hours to go, Leigh got back behind the wheel to do a long double stint to the finish. The run home was action packed with a few more safety cars and with the teams strategy Leigh was in competition for a podium result.
The race favourite BMW M4 had straight line pace all weekend and passed the leading cars with one lap to go to take the win and result in the Mercedes AMG finishing 4th.
“It was a fantastic but grueling six-hour race. The AMG started to struggle with the heat and went into limp mode a few times slowing the pace however we managed it well and bought the car home in a great position. The team’s pit stops were perfect all day and I would like to thank the continued support from Aqualuma Racing, ActronAir, Fast Track Communications, Apex Building Systems, Bluebells Lawyers & York Developments.” said Leigh.
The next round of the Australian Production Car Series will be at Sandown International Raceway 11-13 May.
